Chamomile is the most popular medicinal herb in Europe. It is used to treat many diseases. Chamomile tea is a popular drink that has all the beneficial properties of this healing plant.

Chamomile is an herb belonging to the Asteraceae plant family. It has been used for many centuries as a natural remedy for several health conditions.

To make chamomile tea, the flowers are dried and then poured with hot water. Many people like chamomile tea as an alternative to black tea or green tea for its natural earthy, slightly sweet taste.

Chamomile tea is rich in antioxidants, which are very good for health, due to their properties to reduce the risk of developing several diseases, including heart disease and cancer.

Chamomile soothes the nervous system and helps digestion. In this article, we will take a closer look at chamomile tea, its beneficial properties for the health of women and men.

5 beneficial properties of chamomile tea

1. May improve sleep quality

Chamomile has unique properties that can benefit the quality of your sleep.

It contains apigenin, an antioxidant that binds to certain receptors in the human brain that cause drowsiness. Thus, apigenin can reduce the manifestations of insomnia or chronic lack of sleep ( 1 ).

In one study, women who recently gave birth to a baby drank chamomile tea for two weeks. It was found that their sleep was calmer and longer compared to a group of women who did not drink chamomile tea. They also had fewer symptoms of depression, which is often caused by lack of sleep after childbirth ( 2 ).

Another study showed that people who consumed 270 mg of chamomile extract twice a day for 28 days woke up 3 times less at night and fell asleep 15 minutes faster than those who did not consume the extract ( 3 ).

These results are promising, but more research is needed to determine the effect of chamomile tea on sleep. However, drinking chamomile tea before bedtime is certainly helpful if you have trouble falling asleep.

Summary :
Chamomile contains antioxidants that can contribute to drowsiness and improve overall sleep quality.

2. Chamomile tea helps digestion

Proper digestion is extremely important for overall health.

There is evidence that chamomile can be effective in improving digestion by reducing the risk of developing certain gastrointestinal diseases.

Several studies in mice have found that chamomile extract can protect against diarrhea. This is due to the anti-inflammatory beneficial properties of chamomile tea ( 4 , 5 ).

Another rat study showed that chamomile tea can help prevent stomach ulcers, as it can reduce the acidity of the stomach and inhibit the growth of bacteria that contribute to the development of ulcers ( 6 ).

Despite these results, more human studies are needed to confirm the beneficial properties of chamomile tea for digestion.

Nevertheless, we note that today there are many cases in medical practice when chamomile tea soothes pain in the stomach. Traditionally, chamomile tea is prescribed by doctors to treat several digestive ailments, including nausea and high gas production.

Summary :
Chamomile tea can protect against diarrhea, stomach ulcers, nausea and flatulence due to its anti-inflammatory effects.

3. Can protect against certain types of cancer

Like jasmine tea , chamomile tea contains a large amount of antioxidants that help reduce free radical damage and may have anti-cancer properties.

Chamomile contains an antioxidant – apigenin. In vitro studies have shown that apigenin can fight cancer cells, especially cancer of the breast, digestive tract, skin, prostate and uterus ( 7 , 8 ).

In addition, one study on 540 people showed that those who drank chamomile tea 2-6 times a week were significantly less likely to develop thyroid cancer than those who did not drink chamomile tea ( 9 ).

These results are promising, but better human studies are needed to draw conclusions about the beneficial properties of chamomile tea in cancer prevention.

Summary :
Chamomile tea contains apigenin, an antioxidant that can help reduce inflammation and reduce the risk of several types of cancer.

4. Chamomile tea is good for controlling blood sugar.

Chamomile tea can help lower blood sugar. Its anti-inflammatory properties can prevent damage to pancreatic cells, which occurs when blood sugar levels are chronically elevated.

Pancreatic health is extremely important because it produces insulin, the hormone responsible for removing sugar from the blood.

In one study of 64 patients with diabetes, those who drank chamomile tea with meals daily for eight weeks had significantly lower average blood sugar levels than those who consumed water instead of tea ( 10 ).

In addition, several animal studies show that chamomile tea can significantly lower fasting blood sugar, which can also be helpful in preventing blood sugar spikes after eating ( 11 , 12 ).

Most evidence of the role of chamomile tea in controlling blood sugar is based on animal studies. Nevertheless, the results obtained are impressive ( 13 ).

Summary : The
anti-inflammatory effect of chamomile tea can be helpful in preventing sudden spikes in blood sugar levels, especially when you drink chamomile tea right after eating.

5. May improve heart health

Chamomile tea is teeming with flavones, a class of antioxidants.

Flavones have been studied for their potential properties of lowering blood pressure and cholesterol, which are important markers of the risk of heart disease ( 14 ).

One study of 64 patients with diabetes showed that those who drank tea from chamomile while eating had noticeable improvements in their total cholesterol, triglycerides, and “bad” cholesterol levels of low-density lipo proteins compared to those who drank water ( 15 ) .

More research is needed to confirm the beneficial properties of chamomile tea in maintaining heart health. But, of course, this does not hurt to include this healing drink in your diet.

Summary :
Chamomile is an excellent source of flavone antioxidants that can play a role in improving heart health.

Other Potential Health Benefits

The following beneficial properties of chamomile tea are highlighted by some sources, but are not supported by scientific research:

Increased immunity : chamomile tea is often promoted as a strategy for the prevention and treatment of colds, but evidence is insufficient. It is also believed that it soothes a sore throat.
Elimination of increased anxiety and depression: there is some evidence that chamomile can reduce the severity of anxiety and depression, but this is mainly based on its use as aromatherapy or as a dietary supplement ( 16 ).
Moisturizing the skin: it is believed that the use of chamomile for the skin with the help of cosmetic products, such as lotions, eye creams and soaps, can have a moisturizing effect and reduce inflammation on the skin ( 17 ).
Bone loss prevention: Some argue that chamomile tea can play a role in preventing bone loss, leading to conditions such as osteoporosis. However, evidence is insufficient.

Despite the fact that these beneficial properties of chamomile tea do not have scientific evidence, this does not mean that they are false. They simply have not been studied enough yet, which could happen in the near future.

Summary :
Currently, there is no convincing evidence that the use of chamomile tea strengthens the immune system, skeletal system and affects skin health. In addition, studies regarding its role as a sedative for anxiety and depression are also missing.

Side effects of chamomile tea

Drinking chamomile tea is usually safe for most people.

There are reports of chamomile allergies, which are most likely to occur in people who are allergic to chamomile plants, such as ragweed and chrysanthemum.

In addition, cosmetic products containing chamomile can irritate the eyes if they come in direct contact with them. This can lead to conjunctivitis – inflammation of the lining of the eyes.

It is also important to note that the safety of chamomile tea has not been established for young children, pregnant or lactating women, and people with liver or kidney diseases.

At the same time, there were no reports of life-threatening adverse reactions or toxicity from drinking chamomile tea.

Summary :
Although several people may be allergic to chamomile, for most people, chamomile tea is absolutely safe. Negative side effects are extremely rare.

Chamomile tea is a tasty and healthy drink.

It is rich in powerful antioxidants that can have various health benefits, including reducing the risk of cancer and heart disease.

And although scientific studies studying the beneficial properties of chamomile tea are still in limited numbers, some of their results on the health effects of chamomile tea are promising.

Many studies related to chamomile tea were carried out on animals or in vitro, which makes it difficult to apply the results to humans.

However, chamomile is very safe as a drink, and many people like to drink it for its sweet taste and pleasant aroma.

If you want to know all the beneficial properties of chamomile tea, it is definitely worth including in your diet!
