Nutmeg is a sweet, aromatic fruit that is known for its bright flesh and use in a variety of culinary recipes.

In addition to its unique taste, cantaloupe provides a large number of important nutrients and has many health benefits.

However, it is often confused with other melons, such as cantaloupe melon.

This article discusses the nutritional value, health benefits, and culinary use of cantaloupe, including its difference from cantaloupe melon.

Cantaloupe and cantaloupe melon

The cantaloupe (cantaloupe, muskmelon), also known as Cucumis melo , is a type of melon that belongs to the pumpkin family. It is closely related to other plants, such as pumpkin, zucchini and watermelon ( 1 ).

Cantaloupe has a ribbed, tanned peel and a sweet, musky taste and aroma.

Over the years, many unique varieties of melon have appeared, including cantaloupe. The term “cantaloupe” refers to two varieties of melon: the North American cantaloupe ( C. melo var. Reticulatus ) and the European cantaloupe ( C. melo var. Cantalupensis ).

Given that the cantaloupe of both species is a type of melon, the nutritional content and health benefits are the same.

However, the peel of the North American cantaloupe has a mesh appearance and a more subtle, less pronounced taste. Meanwhile, the European cantaloupe has a light green skin and a sweeter flesh.

Besides cantaloupe, other cantaloupe varieties include honey melon, Persian melon and Santa Claus melon.

Melon is a species belonging to the pumpkin family. Cantaloupe belongs to two varieties of cantaloupe, which differ slightly in taste and appearance, but have the same set of nutrients and healthy properties.

Nutritional value

Cantaloupe is rich in nutrients and provides a wide range of important vitamins and minerals.

It is especially rich in vitamin C, a water-soluble vitamin that helps prevent disease and strengthens immune function ( 2 ).

Some types also contain a large amount of vitamin A, a microelement that is necessary for healthy vision, skin cell metabolism, and also for growth and development ( 3 ).

In addition, cantaloupes contain antioxidants, which are compounds that fight cell damage. Antioxidants in melons include gallic acid, ellagic acid, and caffeic acid ( 4 ).

One cup (156 grams) of diced melon, such as a melon, contains the following nutrients:

  • Calories:  53
  • Carbohydrates: 13 gr.
  • Fiber: 2 gr.
  • Protein: 1 gr.
  • Vitamin C: 64%
  • Vitamin A: 29%

  • Folate: 8%
  • Niacin: 7%
  • Vitamin B6: 7%
  • Magnesium: 5%
  • Thiamine: 5%
  • Vitamin K: 3%

For comparison: 1 cup (170 grams) of honey melon, another type of cantaloupe, contains the following nutrients ( 5  ):

  • Calories:  61
  • Carbohydrates: 15 gr.
  • Fiber: 1.5 g
  • Protein: 1 gr.
  • Vitamin C: 34%
  • Vitamin A: 2%

  • Folate: 8%
  • Niacin: 4%
  • Vitamin B6: 9%

  • Vitamin K: 4%

It is noteworthy that the nutritional compositions of musk varieties are very similar. However, cantaloupe contains significantly more vitamin A and vitamin C than honey melon. It also contains less calories and carbohydrates and a little more fiber.

Cantaloupes are filled with vitamins and minerals. Cantaloupe contains more vitamins A and C than a honey variety, but otherwise the two types of cantaloupe are similar in nutritional value.
